The Return of the Diffusion Line
Remember D&G, Versus, McQ? I see a year ahead when this sector return… As luxury prices keep climbing and economic headwinds tighten, the fashion world appears to be turning a corner. A wave of renewed interest in diffusion and bridge segment fashion is quietly emerging and 2026 might just be the year the "middle ground" gets its second life.
Learning from the Past: Diffusion Lines That Made Their MarkDiffusion lines secondary collections from high end fashion houses, priced lower than the flagship lines have a long history. Classics include Emporio Armani (originally the more accessible offshoot of Giorgio Armani) and DKNY (the diffusion for Donna Karan), both of which historically allowed aspirational buyers access to designer quality at manageable price points.More experimental labels such as McQ the lower priced line from Alexander McQueen proved diffusion could work when it offered a distinct aesthetic and identity, not just a price cut, however without Lee McQueen the brand lost its identity and ultimately shuttered. That said, many diffusion lines including D&G (from Dolce & Gabbana) and Versus (from Versace) eventually shuttered or were folded back into their parent brands, often due to brand dilution or competition from fast fashion and mass market players.
